Au Pair in America
USA/07/10
Washington/ USA
Hello. We are the Smith family. We are interested in different cultures, and we love to travel and explore, so having an au pair for a year will be fun for us, and we hope, for you too! The Smith family consists of Kristin and George (Mom and Dad), and two children: George and Henry. Little George (who is called G-Four by big George's work colleagues) is 5 and Henry is 3. George attends kindergarten full days and Henry goes to preschool every morning. We also have several pets. These include a dog: Maggie, two goldfish who are unnamed and a turtle named Fish. We live in Arlington, Virginia just 2 ½ miles from Washington, DC. The Washington, DC area is a great place to live. We are just a few minutes from all the museums, shows, and nightlife that Washington has to offer. Public transportation is easily accessible - the bus that takes passengers to the subway (we call the subway the Metro) stops at the top of our hill, and we take it to work. We also have a car (a 2007 Toyota Corolla) available for our au pair. Our house is located in a lovely area of Arlington. Across the street from our house there is a golf course and club where we are members. Our membership includes an outdoor pool for summer swimming, which the kids love! It is an easy walk to the club's swimming pool. Our au pair will have a very large (20 feet by 16 feet) sunny bedroom facing the golf course. The room has a walk-in closet and large bed. As a family, we love to watch movies and are known to quiz each other on movie quotes. Along the same theme, we especially love musicals. We do not play any instruments though, just air guitar. Here is a closer look at each child. George is kind and smart. His mind is like a sponge and he rarely forgets facts and is a math whiz like his dad. They love to watch football together and talk stats of the Virginia Tech football team. Henry is exuberant - he loves life. He is very creative and loves to paint and draw. His grandfather, who visits often, loves to shower him with art sets. Our au pair will be driving the children to and from school daily. It takes about five minutes each way. They are not currently enrolled in after school activities as it is winter and weather plays a factor. During the time the children are in school our au pair will be free to take classes, etc. In the summer, the kids go to day camp in the morning at the golf club. There are also lots of fun activities to do like visiting the zoo and museums. At the end of August, our family typically goes on vacation and our au pair would be expected to travel with us in most circumstances.

There are two of us in our family. I have been a single mom for almost five years and have joint custody of my son Sam, who is 7. We are a happy, though somewhat subdued family. Sam is smart, funny and basically hates school, though he is particularly articulate. We talk a lot about feelings. For discipline, we use loss of video games and I try to come up with a consequence related to the offense. We talk a lot about expectations and about the reasons why certain things are OK or not OK. I work full time and was recently promoted, fortunately my job is fairly flexible so I can still have quality time with Sam. I am interested in an au pair for a few reasons. I have a wonderful space in my home for someone. I am now finding myself in a position where I need dependable childcare. We also consider ourselves very lucky to live on a block that includes 14 kids under the age of 9. There are many children close by for Sam to play with after school and on weekends. (Most of the families also have childcare providers, many of whom get together during the week.) Families on the block also assemble at a local playground once a week during the summer months to eat pizza and give the kids a chance to play together. The end of summer is also the occasion for a block party with a parade, moon bounce, clown, balloons, and even a small fireworks show. Sam's dad and I are not officially divorced, but we are both involved in relationships with other people. Sam's dad picks him up from school two days a week and they have dinner together while I work late. Sam sleeps at my house all school nights and two weekends a month. Currently, Sam is in second grade and attends school from 9:00-3:20 daily. The au pairs hours would revolve around caring for Sam after school, on school holidays and getting him up and ready in the morning. The school is close, so it is not necessary for the au pair to drive. Sam and I love to play and do things together. We love our new Dance Dance revolution video game. I am also trying to be more careful about what we eat, especially since Sam and his Dad eat at restaurants a lot. We do not attend Church, but every Sunday dinner is spent at my parent's house. I am prepared to give the Au Pair great flexibility about what she does and where she goes as I recognize a happy au pair is a good au pair and will make my life easier

We are a family of five: ~Dad (Paul) CEO / board member / skier / world traveler ~Mom (Danielle) aka superwoman ~Son (Jason, 15) Boy Scout / computer whiz / athlete / VERY bright young man) ~Daughter (Mary Clare, 12) equestrian/ swimmer / singer and dancer / girlie-girl) ~Daughter (Haley, 9) a super athletic gymnast / swimmer / piano player). All three children are reasonably well behaved, and are accustomed to packing their suitcases to head off on a new adventure. In winter they all love to ski and ogle the Hollywood stars at our home in Vail, Colorado. We also go there in the summers to hike. For a lazy vacation we go to our summer house in Maine. We typically go to Vail and Maine several times a year, and the au pair would be expected to accompany us. This travel is made possible because we own our own jet, so can fly comfortably without long lines at the airports. We have just relocated to New Jersey after eight FANTASTIC years in Paris. Our neighborhood is a gated housing community called Blackhawk Country Club. We live in a very large house with 7 bedrooms and lots of space. The yard has a swimming pool, which is a nice amenity in the summer and patio area with lawn furniture and a grassy area for the kids to play. There is a large bonus room upstairs which we use as a playroom/guest room. The au pair will live in a lovely room with en suite bath. Mary Clare's horse is kept at the stable about a half-mile away. We are quite global and multi-cultural, after traveling (on airlines, not our plane) around the world to places like Germany, China, Singapore, England, Russia, Italy, India etc. Our view of the world, shaped in part by our time living abroad, is very global and not "typically American.2 What is typically American is that Mom and Dad are both serious professionals. Mom is a senior partner at a law firm. Dad runs a company headquartered in Paris, France. Mom and dad adore the kids, but have challenging careers, so there is a household team to partner with Mom and Dad to make it all happen. The team includes a senior nanny-household manager (whose name is Margaret), two full time cleaning ladies (Maria and Celine); the team will be complete once we find an au pair. Since Mom and Dad travel some, an important job for the au pair is "just living with us" as another adult member of the household. Because there are others to help, the most active work hours are the morning, getting ready for school and the after school time, helping to get the kids to their various activities. There will be occasional work hours in the evenings. We very much look forward to introducing an au pair into our family life. An ideal candidate will have a warm, loving personality and an outstanding work ethic. We are a dynamic and fun group. Home is a lively place!

We are an understanding, polite, loving, nurturing, fun and active family and we value learning about new cultures and languages. In our Au Pair, we are looking for an independent, energetic, athletic, patient, positive, fun and social young woman. We feel that effective communication, honesty, positive attitude and mutual respect are crucial to the success of our relationship. I (Kayla) am 31 years old. I am a mother and wife, and work part time. I am active, honest and I love to cook and hang out with my family and friends. I always like to be busy. I am currently working as a counselor. My wonderful husband, Paul is an honest, devoted, strong, hard-working man. He works in sales for a Travel Company, so he travels often for work. Candi is a bright, sweet and headstrong 3-year old. Ricky is an active and loving 19 month old. We have two dogs, who are big but very friendly. We are not a particularly religious family, although we consider ourselves to be culturally Jewish. Ricky will be at a conservative Jewish pre-school (because they have classes for young 2 year olds); Candi attends an Episcopal school. In short, we welcome and will respect any faith (or no faith at all) of our Au Pair, as we would expect them to respect our family's values and beliefs. We try to limit the children's TV time and keep them active. We also want to encourage them to find activities and be able to entertain themselves from time to time. It is especially important that the Au Pair is willing to read to Candi and get down on the floor with her to play games. We are flexible about snacks and food, as long as their diet is well balanced over all. When you are helping to care for our children, we will be together a lot of the time, and there is always plenty to do. I feel a need to accomplish many things each day while spending time with my family so it is really important for you and I to work together as a team. I will also need your help with household duties related to the children (organizing, laundry, tidying up) and teaching them to be responsible. The most important thing is making sure the children are safe at all times. When I am at my job, you will spend most of the time with Ricky, playing, eating and taking walks-keeping him safe and sound will be the number one priority. Your help during the busiest time of the day (which is in the afternoon when the kids are home from school) will allow me to get dinner ready. Paul and I also like to go out together for dinner at least one night a week without the kids; this could be a weekend or weekday night. I look forward to hearing more about you and speaking with you soon. Kayla

At the heart, we are a very close knit loving family that values education, family, and friendships. We love the outdoors and have spent many family vacations skiing, hiking and diving. We also enjoy the cultural benefits (music, theater etc) of living in the New York area. However, most night are spent at home listening to music, watching movies, and enjoying time as a family. My husband works for JP Morgan Chase in New York City. Although I enjoyed my career in business, I left the workplace following the birth of our son. We have 3 three children, age 5, 3 and 1. They love riding their bicycle, playing soccer, swimming and getting together with friends. Our home is three stories and has a good amount of inside and outside space for our family. The au pair's room includes a television, phone, and computer with a high speed internet connection. We live in Ridgewood, 15 miles from New York City. Our family is very accepting of different cultures. My husband and I are of different ethnic and religious heritages. In rising our children we desire to have them be open-minded about and accepting of other cultures.

Single mother with two daughters, 7 and 11 years old. Mrs works for Ernst & Young LLp for 18 years. Older girl adores horses, cats and dogs, she likes to watch TV and talk on the phone. Younger girl likes to play games and to have stories read to her. Both the girls are into soccer and softball. It is important to me that my children are cared for by a loving, caring individual. I want my daughters to be stimulated during the day by playing games, singing, reading and taking walks and/or playing outside. Driving is a necessity since the children participate in extra-curricular activities.
