Many British families choose to host a foreign au pair because they need help caring for their children and some assistance in the home.  They feel it is preferable to have someone responsible at home on a permanent basis rather than send their child or children to a day care centre of have varied part-time carers come into their home.  Although it is quite costly to host an au pair, it provides the family with the added interest of learning about another culture and possibly another language.
